Tuned Mass Damper Systems

Wide spanned and very slender structures are frequently prone to vibrations. To reduce such motions induced by wind, traffic and earthquake, tuned mass dampers can be implemented. These consist of a relatively small mass which is elastically connected to the main structure and tuned to its significant frequency. Special attention has to be paid to the relative damping ratio which can be achieved by VISCODAMPERS®.

The layout of a TMD system is mainly based on empirical values. The positive effects on the behaviour of the entire system can be proofed numerically. Typical vibration hazards can be observed at towers, bridges and high-rise buildings.
